The volcano remains active, emitting near-continuous ash and steam plumes that rise a few 100 meters up to approx. 1.5-1.8 km (5-6,000 ft) altitude.
A 1 km exclusion zone around the active Nakadake crater remains in place and the cable car to its rim, otherwise a popular tourist destination, is not operating.


A large explosion took place at Mexico’s Popocatepetl volcano at around 06:20 UTC on February 25, 2020. According to the Washington VAAC, volcanic ash is rising up to 7.9 km (26 000 feet) above sea level.
