Small portion of the Veil Nebula as photographed by the Hubble Space Telescope

This 3-D visualization flies across a small portion of the Veil Nebula as photographed by the Hubble Space Telescope.

This region is a small part of a huge expanding remnant from a star that exploded many thousands of years ago.

Hubble resolves tangled rope-like filaments of glowing gases. The 3-D model has been created for illustrative purposes and shows that that the giant bubble of gas has a thin, rippled surface.

It also highlights that the emission from different chemical elements arises from different layers of gas within the nebula. In the imagery, emission from hydrogen, sulfur, and oxygen are shown in red, green, and blue, respectively. Credit: NASA, ESA, and F. Summers, G. Bacon, Z. Levay, and L. Frattare (Viz 3D Team, STScI)

Hubble’s unforgettable nebula pictures, the colors you see actually represent the stuff it’s made of. Here, red is hydrogen, green is sulfur, and blue is oxygen.

THE PHOTON-BELT ENCOUNTER
(January, 1998)

By Noel Huntley, Ph.D.

By means of satellite instrumentation, astronomers in 1961 discovered what appeared to be an unusual nebula. We normally understand the nebula phenomenon as a vast cloud-like mass of gas or dust. This one, however, appeared to have anomalous properties and was named the Golden Nebula.

The public’s attention was not drawn to this unusual revelation until much later, presumably when it was realised that this nebula’s location was coincident with the projected orbit of our solar system. Around the early 1980s a radio announcement in the U.S. was made (heard by the author) that our solar system was, in fact, going to collide with an ‘electromagnetic cloud’ in the not too distant future.

This incredibly important statement of astronomical and historical significance was expressed in the usual casual and indifferent manner as though of little consequence…..

BREAKING NEWS: NASA Discovers Bubbling Lakes In The Remote Arctic.

This process can be quite abrupt, leading to a larger and quicker impact

Large releases of carbon are not decades or centuries away, they are rapidly happening today and with it, changing the landscape of the Arctic.

A new eruption started at Sierra Negra volcano, Galapagos, Ecuador around 21:40 UTC (13:40 local time) on June 26, 2018, following intense seismicity in recent weeks. The eruption produced a plume of volcanic ash mixed with SO2 and other gases which is rising up to 8 km (27 000 feet) above sea level. Experts describe the eruption as the worst since 1979. Some say the worst in 200 years.

Volanic Unrest Worldwide: Strong Eruption at Sakurajima volcano, pyroclastic flow, ashfall reported in Kagoshima, Japan

japan

There were eight events and five explosions at Minamidake crater from June 4 to 11. Crater incandescence was occasionally visible at night. Ash plumes rose up to 2 km (1.2 miles) above the crater rim, except during an event at 11:35 JST on June 10 which produced a plume that rose 3.5 km (2.1 miles). Tephra was ejected as far as 1.3 km (0.8 miles) from the crater between June 8 and 11.

The Japan Meteorological Agency maintains the alert level at 3 of 5 since February 5, 2016.

April 19th, 2018: Mount Io (Iwo-yama volcano) erupts for the first time since 1768, Japan

Posted in 2018 with tags , on April 19, 2018 by theboldcorsicanflame

  1. Iwo-yama volcano

Iwo-yama volcano also known as Mount Io and Mount Ioyama, located on the Ebino Highland and a part of Kirishimayama volcano group in Japan’s Kyushu, erupted at 06:39 UTC (15:39 JST) on April 19, 2018 for the first time since 1768.

The volcano ejected ash high into the air, forcing the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) to raise the alert level from 2 to 3 (of 5), restricting access to the volcano.

Today marks the first time JMA has raised the alert level to 3 for this volcano.
The agency said that it confirmed the scattering of volcanic rocks around the crater and added that it is possible that the volcanic activity will further increase.

Residents and tourists are cautioned against falling rocks within 3 km (1.8 km) and pyroclastic flows within 2 km (1.2 miles) from the crater. In addition, the agency called for people to be on guard over the possibility of mudslides after any rainfall, depending on how much ash fell from the volcano.
The last time this volcano erupted was in 1768, exactly 250 years ago, according to the JMA’s Fukuoka Regional Headquarters.

JMA raised the alert level to 1 on February 28, 2016, following an increase in shallow volcanic earthquakes. The alert was raised to 2 on February 20, 2018.

This is just the latest in a series of volcanic eruptions in the Kirishima mountain range. Mount Shinmoedake erupted in October 2017 for the first time in six years and has been active since with occasional eruptions.

Insects, plants, potato seeds and arabidopsis—a small flowering plant belonging to the mustard family – will be taken to the Moon on board the Chang’e-4 lander and rover in December

China hopes to create a ‘mini biosphere’ on the dark side of the Moon, with flowers and silkworms sustaining each other as they grow on the lifeless lunar surface.

The unprecedented plan to create life in outer space is the most intriguing part of China’s lunar probe mission later this year, and could be a major boost for dreams that humans will one day live on the Moon.

The insects, plants, potato seeds and arabidopsis—a small flowering plant belonging to the mustard family – will be taken to the Moon on board the Chang’e-4 lander and rover in December.

They will be placed in an 18cm tall bucket-like tin made from special aluminum alloy materials, together with water, a nutrient solution, and a small camera and data transmission system.

A small tube will direct natural sunlight into the tin to help the plants and potato seeds grow. Although known figuratively as the “dark side” as it is unseen, the far side of the moon receives almost equal sunlight to the near side.

The next stage (…)

The ESA Just Discovered a Second Magnetic Field Surrounding Our Planet

Posted in 2018, astronomy, Galaxy with tags , on April 13, 2018 by theboldcorsicanflame

How are we only seeing this now?

A trio of satellites studying our planet’s magnetic field have shown details of the steady swell of a magnetic field produced by the ocean’s tides.

Four years of data collected by the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Swarm mission have contributed to the mapping of this ‘other’ magnetic field, one that could help us build better models around global warming.
