Like evidence of an alien lifeform, the unearthly light seems to emanate from just below the surface. 

But the ethereal glow at Penmon Point on Anglesey is actually caused by something very much of this world – a chemical reaction called bioluminescence, which occurs when tiny organisms in the water are disturbed as the waves break on the shore.

Photographer Richard Smith, 33, from Cheadle Hulme in Cheshire captured the incredible scene.

Bioluminescence is similar to the effect created by fireflies which glow to attract prey.
