Natural catastrophe costs soar worldwide in 2016

Global natural catastrophe losses reached their highest level in four years in 2016, and the United States experienced the most loss events since 1980, although most of last year’s losses were uninsured, Munich Reinsurance Co. said Wednesday.

Losses from earthquakes, storms and other natural catastrophes totaled $175 billion in 2016, the highest total since the $180 billion in losses experienced in 2012, although insured losses accounted for only $50 billion of losses last year, according to an analysis by the German reinsurer.

“After three years of relatively low nat cat losses, the figures for 2016 are back in the mid-range, where they are expected to be,” Torsten Jeworrek, a member of the Munich Re board of management in Munich, said in a statement.

The costliest natural catastrophes of the year occurred in Asia as two April earthquakes on the southern Japanese island of Kyushu caused $31 billion in damage, less than 20% of which was insured, while floods in China in June and July caused losses of about $20 billion, only about 2% of which were insured, according to Munich Re’s report.

North America experienced more loss events in 2016 than in any other year since 1980, with 160 events recorded, which accounted for $55 billion, or 33%, of global natural catastrophe losses, according to the report. Roughly 54% of the losses in North America last year were insured compared with a long-term average of 44%, according to the report.

12/06/2016 — New Earthquake progression map — Which way does the Earth really “move”?

December 2016

This stream is showing the past 48 hours of USGS reported earthquakes + the last 50 EMSC reported earthquakes internationally.

No voice in this video unless a large earthquake strikes.

Marker height off the globe = depth into the Earth.

The feed may show double earthquakes in some locations due to both USGS + EMSC agencies reporting the events.

When an earthquake strikes, you will hear a rumble, ding, and a bell toll. The bell will toll the number of times = to the earthquake which occurs. (example : M4.0 will ring 4 times).

The most recent earthquake has a green placemark / flag on it.

Tsunami Animation: Three Tsunamis From Chile

This side-by-side comparison of three tsunamis generated within the same region highlights two important characteristics of tsunami behavior. First, the height of the tsunami waves (as shown by color) is strongly dependent on the size of the earthquake, namely its moment magnitude (Mw).

The 9.5 Mw earthquake of 1960 released approximately 11 times more energy than the 8.8 Mw earthquake of 2010 and approximately 89 times more energy than the 8.2 Mw earthquake of 2014. Likewise, the tsunami wave heights were far larger in 1960 than they were in 2010, and larger in 2010 than they were in 2014. Second, the speed of a tsunami does not depend on the size of the earthquake. All three tsunamis move at about the same speed regardless of their size because their waves are so large that they interact with the sea floor.

Therefore, both the ocean depth and its local variations control the speed of the tsunami waves. These two characteristics are critical for PTWC’s ability to issue tsunami warnings. PTWC rapidly detects and analyzes earthquakes as they occur worldwide and use their estimated magnitudes to determine the level for the initial tsunami warning, if necessary.

At the same time, tsunami waves move at a known speed about 50 times slower than earthquake waves, so PTWC can detect earthquakes and issue warnings well in advance of a tsunami’s arrival at all coastlines except for those nearest to the tsunami-causing earthquake. So many new comets were discovered last year that astronomers named 2013 the ‘Year of the Comet’.

2013 saw a dramatic increase in meteor fireballs – What does 2014 have in store?

Observed fireballs (sound only, fragmentation only, confirmed fireballs, total reports) Percentages show yearly variations and variation over the 2005-2013 period.

The whole solar system seems to be undergoing a change, with the weakest solar cycle in 100 years, new bodies being discovered beyond Neptune and, bizarrely, the tally of Jupiter’s moons going up and down, apparently randomly.

Could at least some, if not all, of the major events that have happened around the world in recent years be connected to this increase in fireballs? I mean, some truly astounding things have been happening right in front of our eyes… ‘mystery booms’sinkholes, floodsmass animal deaths‘strange sky sounds’extreme and unusual weather patterns all over the place, revolutions and warssocial chaosbig earthquakes andtsunamis… all on a scale never seen in the ‘modern’ era.
