Decontamination After Radiation Exposure: Simpler Than You May Think

The Japanese government says 20 workers at the disabled Fukushima Dai-ichi power plant have been decontaminated after exposure to radioactive material.

Dozens more, at least, have reportedly been decontaminated within the 12-mile evacuation zone around the plant after Geiger counters picked up evidence of radiation exposure.

That made us wonder just how someone gets decontaminated from radiation – which, after all, is invisible, odorless, tasteless and generally insidious. Most people think of it as “rays,” which is partially correct.

The answer might surprise you.

“Decontamination is very simple,” says Dr. Eric Toner of the University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Biosecurity, who has studied what might happen in the wake of a terrorist’s “dirty bomb” attack.

“As a rule of thumb, 80 percent of decontamination is removing your clothes,” says Toner, an emergency physician. “And 95 percent is removing your clothes and taking a shower — if possible, shampooing your hair. That’s all that’s involved. No fancy chemicals.”

That’s because radiation is carried on dust particles. “The air isn’t radioactive, but small dust particles are,” Toner explains. “You’re essentially washing off the dust.”

So a rain is a good thing at the time of, or after, a radiation leak. Rain washes the dust from the air, diluting it in runoff. (Yes, the runoff would be radioactive, but diluted — and presumably, the ground would also be getting radiation exposure already.)

Dry air, when dust gets kicked up in the air and disbursed over longer distances, is bad.

By the way, the dusty clothes can often be decontaminated simply by washing them, but it depends on the amount of radiation detected. “If you have reason to think they’re heavily contaminated, they should be disposed of properly,” Toner says. That means put in a plastic bag and, if possible, taking them to authorities for disposal.

All this raises another question – how to decide if somebody needs to be decontaminated.

At a place like the Fukushima power plant, where workers wear dosimeters that constantly record exposure and the environment is being continually monitored for radioactivity levels, the decision is clear-cut.

But it’s far less so out among the general public. In a situation like the current one, there’s a profound lack of information on radiation levels at different distances from the power plant and how they might be fluctuating over time.

In an emergency room or post-disaster setting, Toner says doctors would usually use a Geiger counter to screen people – before decontamination, to see if they’ve had any detectable exposure to start with, and afterward, to see if they still have traces of radioactive dust.

There is a lot of Geiger-countering going on in northern Japan right now – as most TV-watchers know by now. But using Geiger counter readings, given in “counts-per-minute,” or cpm, is not necessarily a great way to know if you need decontamination. Or whether it’s time to start taking potassium iodide pills to protect against thyroid cancer.

Steve Herman knows about that. He’s a correspondent for Voice of America who got a Geiger counter scan Thursday in Koriyama, a town 37 miles from the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant as the crow flies.

“My body 1,500 cpm, my boots 3,000 cpm. Another reporter: 10,000 cpm on her shoes,” Herman tweeted.

What to make of those readings? It’s hard to know.

“It is really hard to interpret Geiger counter cpm’s,” Toner says. “They vary from machine to machine. For example, they depend on the size of the probe – the bigger the probe, the more counts detected. And each machine must be calibrated against a known source (of radiation). Translating the cpm’s to an actual exposure does take a health physicist.”

In addition, Geiger counter readings don’t tell you a thing about the type of radiation a person may be exposed to – whether it’s a fairly weak and short-lived isotope that doesn’t pose a health risk, a form of radioactive iodine that signals the need to take protective tablets, or a more sinister isotope, such as cesium-137, that can raise long-term health risks if it gets inside the body.

And this is the most worrisome form of contamination – internal contamination. The bad stuff on skin and clothes is easily washed off. But once radiactice particles get inside the body – through breathing in, but more importantly from ingestion – it can remain in tissues, possibly wreaking submicroscopic havoc, for a lifetime.

That’s why Thursday, Japanese authorities activated provisions of its Food Sanitation Act, which allows the government to test food for radioactive contamination and pull it from the market.

Experts say it was the Soviet Union’s failure to do that, for many weeks after the 1986 Chernobyl power plant disaster, that caused most of the health consequences – which continue to this day

1) Hair

The losing of hair quickly and in clumps occurs with radiation exposure at 200 rems or higher.
(2) Brain

Since brain cells do not reproduce, they won’t be damaged directly unless the exposure is 5,000 rems or greater. Like the heart, radiation kills nerve cells and small blood vessels, and can cause seizures and immediate death.
(3) Thyroid

The certain body parts are more specifically affected by exposure to different types of radiation sources. The thyroid gland is susceptible to radioactive iodine. In sufficient amounts, radioactive iodine can destroy all or part of the thyroid. By taking potassium iodide, one can reduce the effects of exposure.
(4) Blood System

When a person is exposed to around 100 rems, the blood’s lymphocyte cell count will be reduced, leaving the victim more susceptible to infection. This is often refered to as mild radiation sickness. Early symptoms of radiation sickness mimic those of flu and may go unnoticed unless a blood count is done.According to data from Hiroshima and Nagaski, show that symptoms may persist for up to 10 years and may also have an increased long-term risk for leukemia and lymphoma.
(5) Heart

Intense exposure to radioactive material at 1,000 to 5,000 rems would do immediate damage to small blood vessels and probably cause heart failure and death directly.
(6) Gastrointestinal Tract

Radiation damage to the intestinal tract lining will cause nausea, bloody vomiting and diarrhea. This is occurs when the victim’s exposure is 200 rems or more. The radiation will begin to destroy the cells in the body that divide rapidly. These including blood, GI tract, reproductive and hair cells, and harms their DNA and RNA of surviving cells.
(7) Reproductive Tract

Because reproductive tract cells divide rapidly, these areas of the body can be damaged at rem levels as low as 200. Long-term, some radiation sickness victims will become sterile.

Dyson developed & is producing ventilators to help treat COVID-19 patients. The company plans to produce 15,000 ventilators

Posted in 2020, Health, science with tags , , , on March 28, 2020 by theboldcorsicanflame

Dyson — the British technology company best known for its high-powered vacuum cleaners, hair dryers, and fans — has designed a new ventilator, the “CoVent,” in the past several days, which it will be producing in order to help treat coronavirus patients.

The company reportedly developed the ventilator in 10 days based on Dyson’s existing digital motor technology. Dyson is still seeking regulatory approval in the UK for the rapidly designed device, but it’s already received an order from the UK Government for 10,000 ventilators, of which the National Health Service (NHS) is in dire need.

The CoVent is a bed-mounted and portable ventilator, with the option to run on battery power should the need arise.

“This new device can be manufactured quickly, efficiently and at volume,” company founder James Dyson noted in a letter to the company obtained by Fast Company, adding that the CoVent was “designed to address the specific clinical needs of Covid-19 patients.” Dyson also pledged in the letter to donate an additional 5,000 ventilators to “the international effort, 1,000 of which will go to the United Kingdom.”

12 Experts Questioning the Coronavirus Panic

Posted in 2020, Health with tags , , , on March 27, 2020 by theboldcorsicanflame

Below is our list of twelve medical experts whose opinions on the Coronavirus outbreak contradict the official narratives of the MSM, and the memes so prevalent on social media.

* * *

Dr Sucharit Bhakdi is a specialist in microbiology. He was a professor at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz and head of the Institute for Medical Microbiology and Hygiene and one of the most cited research scientists in German history.

What he says:

We are afraid that 1 million infections with the new virus will lead to 30 deaths per day over the next 100 days. But we do not realise that 20, 30, 40 or 100 patients positive for normal coronaviruses are already dying every day.

[The government’s anti-COVID19 measures] are grotesque, absurd and very dangerous […] The life expectancy of millions is being shortened. The horrifying impact on the world economy threatens the existence of countless people. The consequences on medical care are profound. Already services to patients in need are reduced, operations cancelled, practices empty, hospital personnel dwindling. All this will impact profoundly on our whole society.

All these measures are leading to self-destruction and collective suicide based on nothing but a spook.

Bahrain, Belgium successfully treating coronavirus with hydroxychloroquine

Posted in 2020, Health with tags , , , on March 26, 2020 by theboldcorsicanflame

Bahrain and Belgium report their hospitals are successfully treating coronavirus patients with the anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine touted by President Trump as a possible breakthrough in the pandemic.

The Kingdom of Bahrain’s Supreme Council of Health chairman said his country was among the first to use the drug and that its impact has been “profound,” according to the Bahrain News Agency.

Dr. Shaikh Mohamed, who leads the National Taskforce for Combating COVID-19, was also quoted by the news agency as saying hydroxychloroquine was administered according to the same regimens as those used in China and South Korea.

The first COVID-19 case in Bahrain was reported on Feb. 21, and hydroxychloroquine was first administered to patients showing virus symptoms on Feb. 26. As of March 25, the virus had caused 4 deaths in Bahrain, according to the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center.

Hydroxychloroquine is used to prevent and treat malaria and is administered to patients with rheumatoid arthritis or lupus.

Meanwhile in Europe, another U.S. ally, Brussels, is reporting similar early success with the same drug and is taking steps to ensure its availability for the sickest coronavirus patients.

“Using the limited stocks of these medicines for unnecessary or unjustified preventive treatments jeopardizes the availability of these medicines for patients who need them: chronic patients and hospital patients seriously affected by Covid-19,” Belgium’s Federal Agency for Medicines and Health Products said this week.

Belgium, like the United States, has begun a longer-term clinical trial on the efficacy of using Hydroxychloroquine to treat COVID-19 patients.

NY Doctor says his hospital already using Chloroquine for coronavirus patients and have had ZERO deaths

Posted in 2020, Health with tags , , , , , , on March 23, 2020 by theboldcorsicanflame

Laura Ingraham had a doctor from New York’s Lenox Hill hospital on with her last night who explained that they are already using Hydroxychloroquine to treat acute coronavirus patients and are seeing tremendous results.

Dr. William Grace told Ingraham that they have 100 patients and have had zero deaths after the use of Hydroxychloroquine.

Hydroxychloroquine is the less toxic version of Chloroquine.

Grace said that a big reason older people die from the coronavirus is that their lungs fill up with fluid as part of an immune response to the virus.

Hydroxychloroquine works, Grace notes, in both inhibiting the immune response and inhibiting the replication of the virus.

This is really great news and affirms what we are hearing is happening in other countries, as Ingraham points out. Hopefully it will serve as both a cure for the virus and perhaps even a vaccine.

Vitamin C Clinical Trials For Coronavirus Underway In China – Latest Updates

Posted in 2020, Health with tags , , on March 12, 2020 by theboldcorsicanflame

  • The Facts:Dr. Richard Cheng, MD, PhD, a US board-certified anti-aging specialist, is in China providing updates on the situation and potential treatments via his Youtube channel. He claims that Vitamin C is now in the Shanghai Government treatment plan.
  • Reflect On:Is the idea that vitamin C could potentially be useful during the coronavirus outbreak really ‘fake news?’ If this was the case, why would official clinical trials be underway? Why are we being censored for exploring the hypothesis?

Does vitamin C cure Coronavirus? No? Can vitamin C treat Coronavirus? We can’t say it does, but at the same time, we can’t say it doesn’t either.

This is why multiple clinical trials are underway in China to investigate whether or not vitamin C infusion has any effect against Coronavirus and those infected with it. The idea that vitamin C may help in treating the Coronavirus, at least here in the west, seems to be dubbed as ‘fake news,’ which is odd given the fact that authorities should be mentioning that at this point it’s inconclusive.

There remains to be a clear yes or no answer but researchers are hypothesizing that it might have a positive effect which is why in Shanghai, China, vitamin C is being named as part of their overall treatment plan, with official clinical trials underway.

Last month, the US National Library of Medicine posted the information about their clinical trials on their website.

The title of one of the trials is “Vitamin C Infusion for the Treatment of Severe 2019-nCoV Infected Pneumonia.” The sponsor is ZhiYong Peng, and the responsible party is Zhongnan Hospital in Wuhan University (ZNWU).

Medicinal Foods and Beverages Protect Against Coronavirus, Research Suggests

Posted in 2020, Health with tags , , , , , , on March 10, 2020 by theboldcorsicanflame

Natural substances which have been studied for Coronavirus infections include:

  • Black Tea
  • Cinnamon
  • Resveratrol
  • Garlic

Interestingly, we already know that drinking green and black tea has hundreds of evidence-based potential health benefits, including slashing MRSA infection risk in half. It is doubtful that anything of pharmaceutical origin (patented chemical or synthetic biological agents) could reproduce the efficacy, and certainly not the safety, of something as simple as this daily, lifestyle-based intervention.

So, what happens when you add in other immune-supportive agents? What about vitamin C, which we covered in multiple previous posts, which appears to be so effective that the Chinese government and medical authorities are using it to treat Coronavirus infected patients, and in early reports, saving lives? (This information is so threatening to the medical establishment that they are banning Dr. Andrew Saul’s attempts to let people know about the life-saving potential of vitamin C therapy. Video below for more details).

Learn more here.

Clearly, the concept that deadly, invisible germs “out there” are out to get us, and that exposure equates infection equatespossible death, is a concept so frightening that arguably it is causing the very immune-crashing conditions required to contract an actual deadly infection! In fact, I almost decided to write an article titled, ‘What Should We Care Most About: Weaponized Germs or Weaponized Germ Theory?”, in order to address the psychobiological implications of the Old versus New Biology viewpoints, focusing on the implications of the the microbiome, and how waging a war on germs is equivalent to attacking the very microbial infrastructure of our own health and well-being (i.e. the virome is an important part of why we don’t succumb to deadly infection). I decided to focus my attention and energy on getting out potential solutions, but if you are interested in learning more on the topic of why “germ theory” is misleading us, and being used to control the masses, you can watch or listen in on my latest discussion with Charles Eisenstein here, or read the following articles:

Back to immediate solutions. Garlic, of course, has many other potentially life-saving applications, which inspired me to write an article on the topic titled, “The Live Saving Properties of Garlic Revealed,” with a relevant excerpt here:

As far as the research goes, garlic has immensely powerful anti-infective (i.e. suppressing dysbiosis and opportunistic overgrowth of microbes) properties, experimentally confirmed to kill the following:

  1. Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA)[1][2]
  2. Thrush (Fungal overgrowth in oral cavity)[3]
  3. Pseudomonas Aerigonosima, including drug-resistant strains.[4][5][6]
  4. Cytomegalavirus Infections[7][8][9][10]
  5. Mycotoxin-associated aflatoxicosis[11][12]
  6. Helicobacter Pylori infection[13]
  7. Candida (Yeast) infection[14][15][16]
  8. Klebseilla infection[17][18]
  9. HIV-1 infection[19][20]
  10. Vibrio infection [21][22]
  11. Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, multi-drug resistant[23]
  12. Clostridium infections[24]
  13. Viral Infections: Herpes Simplex 1 and 2, Parainfluenza virus type 3, vaccinia virus, vesicular stomatitis virus and human rhinovirus type 2.
  14. Group B Streptococcus Infection[25][26]

This is an impressive smattering of research, but it is likely only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to garlic’s ability to fight infection. Of course, if you wish to view the study references directly, you can find a total of 433 of them here, relevant to garlic’s potential therapeutic role in over 250 different conditions: Garlic Research Database.

Garlic has been specifically studied for Coronavirus infection. In 2016 in Avicenna Journal of Phytomedicine, researchers used the pathogen free embryonic egg model to ascertain the anti-Coronavirus potential of garlic extract, with the intention of finding a pharmaceutical alternative to Coronavirus-associated infectious bronchitis “IBV,” which affects the poultry industry, but which the researchers suggested may be an appropriate model for other coronavirus diseases like SARS and MERS. The study concluded: “The garlic extract had inhibitory effects on IBV in the chickens embryo.”

Even if garlic were only used to prevent bacterial infections, secondary to Coronavirus immunosuppression, or as an expectorant, given it has mucous-dissolving properties, it may provide significant value in those stricken with the condition. This is why I describe the immense therapeutic value of chicken soup in my upcoming book REGENERATE, which I believe puts the pharmaceutical antiviral drug Tamiflu to shame — primarily because it does not have life-threatening side effects like the drug.

All that said, it is important to remember that finding specific “magic bullets” for specific conditions, is the whack-a-mole approach that isn’t necessarily going to address the root-cause reasons why some people become sick after exposure, and many more do not. We must remember that immune status determines susceptibility to infectionand just like exposure does not equateto infection, nor does vaccination equate to bona fide immunity. Nothing — even natural interventions — is going to guarantee complete protection. That said, immune supportive foods and lifestyle practices, are going to have a generally protective effect that is also going to increase your baseline happiness, resilience, and sense of well-being. The key here is not to try to fight fire with fire, but remain as relaxed and equanimous as possible, because as I recently posted in the meme below, global, nebulous, global-media driven fear is arguably one of the most immunotoxic forces on the planet.

Here are additional resources for supporting your immunity:

“Considering the size and geographical spread of the ongoing measles outbreak in Romania, the likelihood of the export of measles cases is high,” the ECDC said.

Romania’s National Institute of Public Health reported 3,071 cases of measles, including 16 deaths, from September 2016 to mid-February 2017.

The previous year, in 2015, Romania reported only seven measles cases. The outbreak is blamed in part on parents failing or refusing to vaccinate their children…….

The highest number of cases was reported in southwest Romania, in the Caras-Severin, Arad, and Timis counties, on the border with Serbia and Hungary, where more than 1,900 cases were reported.

Most cases have been registered in poor rural communities. Romania has lowered the age for the first vaccine dose from the usual 12 months to nine months and has recommended that all children up to nine years of age are vaccinated to curb the outbreak.

Hungary Fears Measles Epidemic Coming From Romania After a hospital in Hungary was quarantined on Thursday and a number of measles case were reported, doctors fear an epidemic might have spread from over the border in Romania.
